The Inspiration Behind Seersucker With Priya Downes

Slow mornings, summer dressing and the fabric that started it all.

Seersucker is our latest sleep collection, inspired by the fabric’s distinctive texture, timeless appeal and effortless approach to summer dressing. We sat down with our founder, Priya Downes to talk about the inspiration behind the collection.

Where did Seersucker begin?

Expanding our white pyjama offering felt like the right next step but we wanted to create something a little more robust, pieces you could reach for beyond the bedroom. Seersucker felt like the perfect progression. There's something about the fabric that just works. Effortless to wear, easy to style and relaxed enough to move with you through the season and beyond.

If seersucker were a place, what would it be?

A sun-bleached veranda somewhere warm. The kind of place where time slows down and no one's in a hurry to get anywhere.

What's your favourite piece from this collection?

My favourite piece is the Boxy Shirt. It has a relaxed drape that makes it incredibly easy to style beyond the bedroom. I’ll wear it over jeans for everyday errands or throw a blazer over it for the evening. The beauty of the collection is that it works wherever the day takes you.

Is there anything that surprised you about the design process?

How much the stripe does the work. We kept the silhouettes deliberately simple because the fabric itself has so much character, that texture, that faint crinkle. You don't need to overcomplicate it. Sometimes restraint is the whole point.

Where does the word Seersucker come from?

The name seersucker comes from the Persian phrase shir o shakar, meaning “milk and sugar”. It refers to the fabric’s distinctive texture, where smooth and puckered stripes sit side by side. I loved that contrast. It felt like the perfect starting point for a collection built around softness and structure, ease and elegance, nostalgia and modernity. That balance influenced everything from the relaxed silhouettes to the striped designs throughout the collection.

Why is seersucker such a timeless summer fabric?

Seersucker has been loved for generations because it combines comfort with practicality. Dating back to the early 1900s, the fabric became a warm-weather staple thanks to its puckered texture, which helps lift it away from the skin and allows air to circulate more freely. Its subtle stripes and distinctive finish give it a timeless character that never really goes out of style.

Who is the Seersucker woman?

Someone who has her own sense of ease. She's not dressing to impress, she's dressing for herself, for comfort and for the day ahead. She probably has a few pieces she's worn for years and loves them more for it. We were designing for her.
