I was recently lucky enough to escape the hustle of London and head to the bustling streets of Milan for a lazy long weekend. And the beauty of it was, I just went with the flow, no real itinerary just Nudea’s organic cotton Seersucker Collection in my suitcase and a short wish list: pizza, gelato and Aperol.

It was my first time in Milan but I found the pace enchanting, a little calmer than London but the same charm and busyness that keeps the city feeling alive. We stayed in the vibrant but somehow equally quiet Brera where winding streets house traditional trattorias on every corner and busy bars down narrow lanes spill out onto the streets. The most popular places have long queues of people waiting outside for a seat no matter how long it takes. People watching here could easily become an obsession from watching effortlessly dressed locals who pair simplicity with style to double-taking loud and extravagant outfits that crave your undivided attention. Every other person is also accompanied by an equally stylish pooch prancing down the city streets or perched on their lap as they enjoy an aperitivo.
Breakfast, Lunch & Aperitivos
One morning, we treated ourselves to an indulgent breakfast at Pasticceria Marchesi, a historic pastry shop founded in 1872. With its refined, elegant interiors, it’s renowned for its exceptional cakes and authentic coffee. If you go, don’t miss the classic panettone paired with a perfectly brewed espresso, the kind of simple combination that really shows why this place has been around so long. I think the quietly considered food moments were my favourite, grabbing lunch from All’Antico Vinaio, Moscava. A gluten free version of the famous sandwich shop that I waited almost an hour to get inside. But the porchetta and smoked cheese focaccia was well worth the wait. Messy, a bit indulgent and best eaten on a step, park bench or wherever you happen to be. Dessert is never far away. A tiramisu from Spun, eaten standing outside because it’s easier that way. Or gelato from Crema, their vegan options are sensational.
As the day eases into sundown, aperitivo hour inhabits the streets with platters of snacks (think pizza breads, popcorn, olives and crisps) accompanied by the famous Aperol spritz or Campari spritz if that is more your flavour. You don’t need a reservation just appear between 5pm and 8pm and enjoy for an hour or two before dinner. We stopped at Moma before enjoying a delicious meal at Miscusi, a B Corp spot dedicated to serving sustainable fresh pasta that is made in front of you.

Wherever The City Takes You
One afternoon found us strolling towards Parco Sempione. Where we sat on the grass, enjoyed an ice cream and watched the world go by. A picnic here would be the perfect way to spend a lazy afternoon. It’s not about doing anything in particular. Just sitting, watching, letting the day stretch out a bit. Shopping slips easily in too. Not in a rushed way and more browsing than buying. Small shops in Brera and larger streets closer to the centre. Well-made things - silk scarves, hand crafted pottery, pieces you consider for a moment even if you don’t take them home. Milan doesn’t ask for much from you. Just that you notice things as you go and let the day unfold in its own way.
A Day Trip To Lake Como
If you have a spare day, it’s worth visiting Lake Como. It’s a short 40 minute car journey or 1 hour train from Milan and the shift feels immediate. Turquoise waters, winding rustic streets and impressive mountains surrounded by fresh greenery. We visited Varenna and wandered around grabbing takeaway pizza and the occasional spritz before taking in Villa Monastero. I do have to say the crowds were very intense here - especially on the train - so go early and leave early before it gets crazy. You don’t need to spend hours and hours here and I wouldn’t waste time waiting in a ferry line.

Back in Milan, the evening was perfectly spent in Navigli, a quaint canal side area with a lively atmosphere. Find a table, order something simple - pasta, vegetables, wine and let it turn into a longer evening without really noticing.

Italian Summer In Seersucker
I timed the trip perfectly with the launch of Nudea’s Seersucker Collection a crinkled cotton that was lightweight, breathable and perfect for city strolls and laid back lunches. Throw on The Button Cami with a pair of light jeans, loafers and a blazer and you would fit right in with the locals at sunset.
